The Los Angeles Times published a profile of performance artist, comedian and writer Kristina Wong, highlighting her as a new recipient of the Doris Duke Artist Award and urging readers to check out her latest LA-area solo show. Announced at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Doris Duke Artist Awards at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Feb. 13, Wong is one of six artists receiving this year's newly doubled, unrestricted prize of $550,000 for her contributions to the field of theater. Established in 2012, the Doris Duke Artist Award is the largest national prize dedicated exclusively to individual performing artists.
In addition to Wong’s award, the article also explores the impetus behind her new solo show, “Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord,” which is playing at Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, CA, through March 12. “The show, a co-production between Center Theatre Group and East West Players, was born out of Wong’s experience forming a group called the Auntie Sewing Squad — a collective of mostly Asian women who organized through Facebook to sew masks for at-risk individuals, front-line workers and vulnerable communities during a time when masks (and the protection they afforded) were incredibly hard to find,” writes The Los Angeles Times.
