Situated on the southeastern coast of O’ahu in Honolulu, Hawai’i, Shangri La is a cultural hub and convening center where art, ideas, and people come together.

Founded by Doris Duke in the 1930s and home to the only U.S. museum dedicated to Islamic art, Shangri La curates residencies, convenings, and events, and hosts partner-led initiatives that engage conversations of local and global significance and drive our mission forward. Through immersive experiences and global collaboration, Shangri La fosters connection across disciplines, perspectives and communities.

Indo-Pacific Futures Fellowship

The East-West Center, co-developed with the foundation, convened a group of emerging leaders across 14 Indo-Pacific countries to address challenges from food security to sustainable development. The inaugural cohort of 16 fellows participated in 25+ sessions with 35+ speakers, including site visits and cross-sector dialogues.

Charting the Future: The Second Order Effects of AI

The Doris Duke Foundation and Aspen Digital co-hosted this three-day convening at Shangri La in Honolulu to explore AI’s long-term societal impacts. Leaders from arts, tech, philanthropy and policy—including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and fiction author Ted Chiang—informed a white paper which offers recommendations for mitigating harm and amplifying the public good of AI.

Western States Arts Federation Convening

During the opening week of the 2024 Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FestPAC), Shangri La welcomed leaders from the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies as the host convening site for the Western States Arts Federation. Together, these gatherings brought global and regional cultural leaders into dialogue around shared priorities in cultural leadership, equity, and the role of the arts in shaping more connected futures.
