Makaya McCraven is a Chicago-based drummer, composer and producer who has emerged as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz. Born in Paris to a Hungarian singer and flutist and an African American jazz drummer, he spent his childhood in the culturally rich community of Northampton and Amherst, Massachusetts, and credits his upbringing with deeply shaping his worldview and musical vision. McCraven has built a reputation as a “cultural synthesizer,” blending jazz, hip-hop, folk and orchestral elements into a unique post-genre sound.

His third album "In the Moment" garnered international attention upon release in 2010, followed by the success of "In These Times" in 2022. In October 2025, he released four new EPs — "Techno Logic," "The People’s Mixtape," "Hidden Out!" and "PopUp Shop" — all of which are compiled on the 2xLP and 2xCD physical release "Off the Record". The source material from each EP was drawn from moments of pure improvisation, recorded live in performance, shaped as much by the room and audience as by the musicians themselves.

McCraven’s work defies easy categorization. He transforms live jazz improvisations into meticulously edited, layered soundscapes. Critics have hailed him as “one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality”. On stage and in the studio, he continues to push boundaries by crafting music that bridges past and present, spontaneity and structure, intimacy and expansiveness. Whether leading a live ensemble, sculpting beats in post-production, or weaving strings with saxophones and percussion, McCraven remains at the center of a jazz-rooted, 21st-century folk-music renaissance.
