Building a More Equitable Medical Research Enterprise

Purpose

The Doris Duke Foundation seeks to advance greater equity in medicine and in health outcomes.

Rationale

The Doris Duke Foundation seeks equity in health outcomes, which we believe starts with a more equitable biomedical research enterprise. Our investments range from support for more diverse and inclusive medical research environments to efforts that seek to confront often latent inequities in existing research paradigms.

The foundation has recently pursued this work through a range of significant initiatives, including a collaborative focused on supporting caregiving needs in biomedicine, an initiative focused on addressing the misuse of race in clinical algorithms, and a national effort to achieve equity across STEMM sciences by 2050. Previous efforts consist of support for access to research experiences through the Clinical Research Continuum: High School to College program and discovery for sickle cell disease treatments and cures through Sickle Cell Disease/Advancing Cures grants.
